Chance of snow in some counties as Met Éireann issue second weather warning with lows of -4C
There is a chance of snow for some counties tonight as temperatures are to fall to as low as -4C due to a winter chill gripping the country.
Freezing temperatures will continue for the country today with motorists advised of hazardous road conditions as a second ice warning comes into effect from this evening.
Temperatures are to drop as low as -4 degrees tonight with sharp frost and icy patches forming overnight. Some counties, most likely in the northwest, will see showers fall as sleet or snow.
A Status Yellow low temperature and ice warning, issued by Met Éireann for the entire country came into effect on Thursday at 5pm and remains in place until midday today.
“Very cold with temperatures expected to fall below -3 degrees in many areas. Frost and ice developing will cause hazardous travelling conditions,” the warning states.
The national forecaster has issued a second Status Yellow low temperature and ice warning for every county in the country from 5pm this evening, lasting until midday on Saturday.
Fog and freezing fog will create hazardous road and path conditions as well as some travel disruption.
This morning any frost, ice, and mist or fog will gradually clear.
It will be cold and bright today with sunshine and scattered showers, mainly in the north and west, with the odd shower on eastern coasts.
Some showers will fall as hail or sleet. Highest temperatures today will range between 2 to 6 degrees in just a light variable breeze.
Some isolated showers are expected overnight, possibly of sleet or snow, mainly across the northwest.
“Very cold with lowest temperatures of 0 to - 4 degrees with a widespread sharp frost and icy patches. Mist and fog in parts too,” Met Éireann has warned.
Tomorrow will be cold with frost and ice to begin. Most areas will be dry through the day, with any wintry showers mainly along north and west coasts.
Highest temperatures of just 2 to 6 degrees in light west to southwest breezes.
The weekend will be “very cold with frost, ice and some wintry precipitation” before turning less cold by next week.
It will be cold on Saturday night, with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle moving in off the Atlantic, possibly turning wintry over higher ground. Lowest temperatures of -3 to +2 degrees, with light variable breezes.
Sunday will likely be a mostly dry day with showers lingering near coasts, along with low cloud or mist struggling to clear through the day. Highest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees, with light northeasterly breezes.
Monday will be wet and windy, which will spread over the south and east of the country early on in the day, with the possibility of scattered falls of sleet. Coldest in the north with milder weather possible in the south.
It is expected to be less cold next week, however Met Éireann has said there is considerable uncertainty in the further outlook, with a signal so far for a “return to a more Atlantic regime.”
